Bernie: But she said she wanted to go out with you?
William: Yes – sort of…
Bernie: That’s nice.
William: What?
Bernie: Well, you know, anybody saying they want to go out with you is… pretty great… isn’t it…?
William: It was sort of sweet actually – I mean, I know she’s an actress and all that, so she can deliver a line – but she said that she might be as famous as can be – but also… that she was just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.
[pause]
William: Oh, sod a dog. I’ve made the wrong decision, haven’t I?

Sergeant Horvath: I don’t know. Part of me thinks the kid’s right. He asks what he’s done to deserve this. He wants to stay here, fine. Let’s leave him and go home. But then another part of me thinks, what if by some miracle we stay, then actually make it out of here. Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful, shitty mess. Like you said, Captain, maybe we do that, we all earn the right to go home.

Fanny Brawne: I still don’t know how to work out a poem.

John Keats: A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving into a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore but to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out, it is a experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept the mystery.

Tess McGill: [pretending to be her boss] I know what I’m doing.
Cynthia: Yeah, screwing up your life.
Tess McGill: No, I’m trying to make it better! I’m not gonna spend the rest of my life working my ass off and getting nowhere just because I followed rules that I had nothing to do with setting up, OK?

Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Mr. Crummles: In every life, no matter how full or empty one’s purse, there is tragedy. It is the one promise life always fulfills. Thus, happiness is a gift and the trick is not to expect it but to delight in it when it comes. And to add to other people’s store of it. What happens if too early we lose a parent, that party on whom we rely for only everything? What did these people [indicating Nicholas, Kate and Madeline Bray] do when their families shrank? They cried their tears but then they did the vital thing. They built a new family, person by person. They came to see that family need not be defined merely as though with whom we share blood, but as those for whom we would give our blood.

Marmee: If you feel your value lies in being merely decorative, I fear that someday you might find yourself believing that’s all that you really are.  Time erodes all such beauty, but what it cannot diminish is the wonderful workings of your mind: Your humor, your kindness, and your moral courage.  These are the things I cherish so in you.  I so wish I could give my girls a more just world.  But I know you’ll make it a better place.

Ray Kinsella: I bet it’s good to be playing again, huh?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: Getting thrown out of baseball was like having part of me amputated. I’ve heard that old men wake up and scratch itchy legs that been dust for over fifty years. That was me. I’d wake up at night with the smell of the ball park in my nose, the cool of the grass on my feet… The thrill of the grass.

The Best Medicine…

Standard

This has been a tough week for me…and I can’t even pinpoint why exactly!  But what I do know is that laughter is the best medicine for me when I’m feeling a little blue!

To break myself out of a funk the last couple of nights I’ve given myself a big dose of laughter due to watching…

What About Bob?

Have you seen this hilarious movie?  Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss are so fantastic in this film about a dependent patient driving his psychologist mad!  I forgot how much I love this early 90′s gem!!

Frasier

I’ve been watching a couple of old Frasier episodes each night right before bed…and can I just say that giggling yourself to sleep makes for sweet dreams!!  Frasier & Niles snoody antics continue to have me in stitches!!

What makes you feel better when you’re having a rough day?
